(Rapid pic)PETALING JAYA: The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has assured senior citizens that they have nothing to worry following the introduction of a requirement that PJ City Bus passengers will have to scan the QR code to use public transportation.
Speaking to FMT, councillor Kavin Thayalan said senior citizens who are not tech-savvy could just speak to the bus drivers and they would be allowed to board. They just need to produce their MyKad to prove they are Malaysians.
The bus drivers, he added, would also ask passengers they suspect to be foreigners for their MyKad.
He stressed that the move was to make foreigners pay for the bus ride.
“This is not new as the policy has already been implemented in other areas in Selangor. We are one of the last to do so. We are only charging foreigners. We do not want to subsidise the bus fares for them. But it is still free for locals,” he said.
On Thursday, MBPJ announced that commuters would need to scan a QR code when boarding the bus, as well as before disembarking.
It also said foreigners would be charged RM0.90 per ride from Jan 15.
Jay Jay Denis, a special officer to Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari, confirmed that this policy had been implemented in Selangor.
“It was announced in Nov 2020 for the state’s 2021 budget. The day-to-day operations are run by the local councils and they will operate according to their own capacity and readiness to transition (into this new policy).
“This is part of the state’s aim to digitalise its government services,” he said. - FMT
