Domestic Flight Passengers Increase Three Fold Says Mahb

The KLIA-Changi route was the world’s busiest international flight route in 2018 and 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic forced the restriction of air travel.PETALING JAYA: The monthly domestic passenger movements across the Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd’s (MAHB) network of airports in the country has increased three-fold.
MAHB noted that the monthly domestic passenger movements increased from 362,000 in September to 1.18 million passengers in October.
“This increase of 226% followed the lifting of domestic travel restrictions which had also contributed to the group achieving more than one million total passenger traffic movements in Malaysia for the first time this year,” MAHB managing director Iskandar Mizal Mahmood said in a statement today.
MAHB’s assets in other countries such as Turkey had also recorded positive passenger traffic movements.
“In October, the Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport in Turkey registered 2.7 million passengers with a 13% increase from the previous month for international passenger traffic movements.”
He said Turkey’s high vaccination rate and the roll-out of its very own Covid-19 vaccine could be the factors that boosted the confidence of international tourists to visit the country.
Further, MAHB had also registered 869,445 metric tonnes for its total cargo operations up to October this year, representing a significant increase of 26% from the same period last year.
He also welcomed the recently announced Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) between KLIA and Singapore’s Changi Airport, the Langkawi international travel bubble and the upcoming travel corridor between Malaysia and Indonesia, saying it will further improve passenger traffic in the coming months.
Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, the KLIA-Changi route was the world’s busiest international flight route for two years in a row, in 2018 and 2019, recording more than 30,000 flights a year.
“It is likely that the same demand will continue to exist for this route,” he added. - FMT
