Doe Seeks Public Feedback On Lynas Disposal Site Plan In Gebeng Due Nov 25
The Department of Environment (DOE) is seeking public feedback on Lynas’ plan to construct a permanent disposal facility (PDF) in the Gebeng Industrial Estate in Kuantan, Pahang.
An environmental impact assessment (EIA) report of the proposed project has also been uploaded onto DOE's website for public perusal.
The department, on its Facebook page, announced this and invited the public to give their feedback on the project, which would see the disposal of radioactive water leach purification (WLP) residue from the Lynas rare earth plant.
The proposed site is located at Lot 31375, Kuantan Gebeng Industrial Estate, which sits 30m from the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (Lamp).
According to the DOE, the project spans 25ha and will take five years to complete.
Gading Senggara Sdn Bhd (GSSB) is the contractor for the PDF while the EIA report was prepared by consulting firm Dr Nik & Associates Sdn Bhd.
Members of the public can view the EIA report, starting from yesterday (Oct 12) until Nov 10, while the deadline for feedback is Nov 25.
Alternatively, the public can find the EIA report at the DOE headquarters in Putrajaya, the Pahang DOE office and at the Kuantan City Council.
In February 2020, the then Pakatan Harapan cabinet allowed Lynas to renew its licence with several conditions, including requiring the PDF to be built within a year.
Lynas initially planned to do so in the Bukit Ketam forest reserve, but that plan was rejected by the DOE.
The government has twice agreed to extend the deadline for constructing the PDF - from March to September 2021, and then to March 2022.
On July 24, Malaysiakini reported that the Australian mining company was looking for a new site to build the PDF.
However, Bentong MP Wong Tack and Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh warned that there are flood risks in the proposed area and possible risk of groundwater contamination, therefore they suggested that the PDF should not be built in Gebeng. - Mkini
