Do Your Homework First Before Answering In Parliament Dr Wee Tells Teo

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong has chided Deputy Education Minister Teo Nie Ching over her parliamentary answer on the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) certificate issue
"Do your homework diligently first before answering in the Dewan Rakyat,” said the MCA president
Dr Wee, who is Ayer Hitam MP, chided Teo for her unprofessional answer on the issue which he raised during Question Time in Parliament with regard to students seeking to obtain the SPM certificate
He urged Teo to correct her erroneous answer on the issue as it had misled Parliament and could result in her being referred to the Rights and Privileges Committee.

"If she cannot answer, then let the Education Minister answer because the minister sits in the Cabinet," he said at a press conference at Parliament lobby on Monday (April 8).

Earlier in Dewan Rakyat, Dr Wee asked Teo to clarify if students could qualify for the SPM certification by obtaining a credit in the Bahasa Melayu paper although they are required to sit for six compulsory subjects and pass the History paper.Dr Wee, who was former deputy education minister, noted there is a contradiction in the government's talk of recognising the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) when there is still the need to pass the History paper
"It is compulsory to pass History paper and that means, even if you get an A-plus for Bahasa Melayu, there is no way to qualify for the SPM certification," he said
In her reply, Teo insisted that a student can obtain the SPM certification by only sitting for the Bahasa Melayu paper
She said that although students were required to sit for the six compulsory subjects, they could obtain their SPM certification by sitting for the Bahasa Melayu paper with approval from the Examinations Syndicate
"This is already in the system and I am puzzled that as a former deputy education, you are not aware that the Examinations Syndicate allows for a student to sit for the SPM Bahasa Melayu as a single paper or repeat paper in July," Teo said when answering Dr Wee's question
Later, in Parliament lobby, Teo clarified her remarks, saying that a candidate would only obtain an SPM result slip if he or she only sits for one compulsory subject
“Only if you take six subjects, get credit in BM and pass in history, then you will get the SPM certification," she said
She insisted that a student can opt to take only one subject under the approval of the Examinations Syndicate.- Star
