Diesel Subsidy Govt To Study Ways To Assist Tour Buses

Government spokesperson Fahmi Fadzil today said relevant ministries will engage with tourism industry players affected by the removal of subsidised diesel at the pump.
Speaking to reporters in Putrajaya, he cited requests made to the Tourism Ministry yesterday for the government to intervene, as tour buses are currently not eligible for targeted diesel subsidy schemes.
Asked whether tour buses will be included in the list of eligible recipients, Fahmi said “not permanently”.
“But I think for a particular period the government intends to look at a mechanism in which we can assist this particular group because the announcement (of subsidy removal) came at a time when they had made certain arrangements,” he said.
The communications minister also said further details on the assistance will be announced by the Tourism Ministry and Transport Ministry following engagements with stakeholders.
“This means any party that requires government intervention, there is a channel, a way for them to request it.
“What the prime minister said, if there are grounds for consideration, we will consider the requests,” Fahmi said.
He added related requests can also be made by individuals who are using their personal vehicles for "p-hailing” or delivery of goods.
PM requesting feedback
Within 72 hours since the removal of the blanket diesel subsidy, Fahmi said certain petrol pumps along Malaysia’s borders in Rantau Panjang and Wang Kelian had recorded a drop in diesel sales, indicating a “success” in efforts to eradicate smuggling activities.
Overall, Fahmi said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who chaired the cabinet meeting today, had requested feedback regarding the blanket diesel subsidy removal enforced on Monday.
Among others, he said Anwar also instructed for a resolution to issues surrounding the distribution of fleet cards by oil companies under the Subsidised Diesel Control System (SKDS) for commercial vehicles including school buses, express buses, stop-and-go buses and minibuses. - Mkini
