Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching hopes that the MMC will play a more effective role in creating a dispute resolution mechanism. — Bernama picSEGAMAT, Nov 2 — The first annual general meeting (AGM) of the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) on November 7 is set to be an important turning point that will pave the way for the body to emerge as the main driver of standards of professionalism and media freedom in the country.
Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching hopes that the MMC will play a more effective role in creating a dispute resolution mechanism as well as formulating guidelines and ethics that can help the industry address modern issues related to media practices.
“In addition, if there is a dispute, and one party feels that the report is unfair or if there are any other issues, they can bring it up with the Media Council so that there is a mechanism to handle that dispute,” she said at the 2025 Johor DAP State Annual Convention media conference at the Siang Hai Recreation Centre here today.
Teo added that after the inaugural AGM, the MMC leadership will be elected by its own members and no longer appointed by the government, thus enabling the council to move more freely and play a more active role in strengthening the country’s media ecosystem.
The MMC’s inaugural AGM will also discuss the election of Council Board members in accordance with Section 8(4) of the Malaysian Media Council Act, as well as determine the procedure in relation to conducting the next AGM, the membership fee, standard operating policies, and the Budget for the Council for the Financial Year 2026. — Bernama
