Dap Reaping What Mca Sowed Wee Reminds Loke
MCA president Wee Ka Siong has reminded DAP leaders that the rights they currently enjoy are from the fruits of MCA’s actions since independence.
“Our citizenship rights, right to vote, (the rights) enjoyed by DAP leaders now... The right to be elected as a representative. Don’t forget... We (MCA) fought for those rights.
“Don’t say we have not done anything, it really hurts us,” he said in a video uploaded on Facebook yesterday.
Wee was responding to a comment made by DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke that MCA had an image of not prioritising the public’s interest, especially the Chinese community.
He also highlighted the establishment of two MCA-funded universities - Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) and Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT).
He said the institutions have produced 383,000 graduates, proving the party’s contributions to the country.
Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman“That is not a small figure. And currently, there are 53,000 students in these two institutions.
“What does this mean? If MCA did not do anything, how could we have this result?”
Further, Wee also asserted that his party has acted as the government’s check and balance and is responsible for maintaining racial harmony.
“We don’t want the people to fight. That’s why MCA is seen as a party that is not too extreme. We want to highlight the spirit of goodwill. That is our strength.”
Disagreements with DAP
Therefore, he lambasted Loke for denying MCA’s impactful contributions to the Chinese community, just because the Chinese-based party “could not dance to DAP’s tune”.
DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke“DAP wanted a Malaysian Malaysia, we don’t agree on that. And then they had the Setapak Declaration in the 1960s, wanting equality among races and no differences between the bumiputeras and non-bumiputeras.
“Then they wanted to abolish the quota system. And by their standards, MCA is considered a failure.
“Now, it’s fated... They are in power. I’ll leave it to you to do what needs to be done. Prove that you are capable, I will applaud you if you can do it.”
Wee’s rebuttal comes after Loke’s remarks during an interview on the Keluar Sekejap podcast hosted by Khairy Jamaluddin and Shahril Sufian Hamdan.
Loke, who is also transport minister, had said there is a perception that MCA is a “towkay party”, saying the party is only for the rich and people with positions.
Towkay party? Illogical
In response, Wee refuted the “towkay party” label, stressing that MCA has always fought for the interests of the people from all levels of society since 1949.
Although MCA was founded by Tan Cheng Lock – a businessperson, he said the party consists of members from all walks of life.
MCA supporters“We have children of rubber tappers, newspaper vendors, hawkers, and teachers. Does that portray MCA as a ‘towkay party’?
“My parents were rubber tappers. I’m the president today. If it’s a ‘towkay party’, how is it that the son of a rubber tapper (can helm the president post)? It’s wrong and illogical.
“Now that they (DAP) are ministers, they are friends with Tan Sris and Datuk Seris. Who is the ‘towkay party’ now?” he queried.
The Ayer Hitam MP then warned DAP against attacking MCA merely to garner votes.
“MCA is brave because we speak the truth. It’s okay if we are being insulted.
“But we know our position, that is we want a more harmonious Malaysia and we want more friendly relations among races.” - Mkini
