Cops Suspend Inter State Notice Rule After Crowds At Police Stations

CORONAVIRUS | Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador has rescinded a rule requiring the public to notify the police if they wish to travel inter-state during the Movement Control Order period, beginning midnight
In a statement late tonight, Hamid said he did so after large crowds have begun gathering from last night (March 17) at police stations across the country. "Seeing how the public is of the opinion that they can travel if they get permission from the police, there is now serious congestion at police and bus stations
"Only those who qualify for exemptions can be considered for approval to travel across state borders
"As an early step to address this problem, the need for an exemption under the movement control order has been postponed for now to solve the congestion and inconvenience faced by everyone," he said
Hamid explained that the order stipulated people could only cross state borders if they managed to obtain "exemption permits" under one of the following conditions:If a close family member had died;If a family member is seriously ill;If people need medical treatment for themself or for their family member; or,Other matters at the discretion of the police station chief.This was in line with the government's decision to impose a nationwide movement control order, or partial shutdown, effective midnight tonight (March 18) to March 31
This order is meant to prevent the Covid-19 virus from further spreading by enforcing intense social distancing measures
Despite the order to restrict movements, thousands of Malaysians were seen crowded outside police stations tonight as they attempted to obtain police clearance to travel back to their hometown. There has been a massive exodus from the Klang Valley tonight as Malaysians, many who can't work or attend classes tomorrow, try to beat the enforcement of the Movement Control Order.  - Mkini
