PETALING JAYA: Police have begun an investigation into the gathering by family members of Security Offenses (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) detainees outside the Sungai Buloh prison complex.
Sungai Buloh police chief Hafiz Nor revealed that the families started gathering around 8.10am yesterday with banners calling for the government to abolish the law.
In a Bernama report, Hafiz said police are probing the gathering under Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 and are currently in the process of identifying individuals to be questioned.
He added that the event organisers could also face a fine of up to RM10,000 for failing to submit a notice to the police about the gathering.
Yesterday, FMT reported that some 50 family members of inmates detained under Sosma started a hunger strike outside the Sungai Buloh prison complex to protest their visit applications being dismissed.
M Logesvaran, 49, whose brother is detained under Sosma, yesterday said the family members wanted to visit the detainees to determine their health and their living conditions in prison.
The families’ visit requests were rejected with prison officers informing them that the office would be closed for five days due to the Thaipusam holiday. Thaipusam falls on Tuesday, Feb 11.
