Cops Identify Suspects Who Made Death Threats Against Nik Elin
Police have identified the individuals behind three social media accounts that allegedly made death threats against lawyer Nik Elin Zurina Nik Abdul Rashid, who challenged the Kelantan syariah criminal provisions in court.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Allaudeen Abdul Majid reportedly said that police have opened three investigation papers on threats made against the lawyer, with one of them having already been completed.
“Nik Elin lodged three police reports last year and we opened three investigation papers. One of them has already been completed and submitted to the deputy public prosecutor.
“Police are still investigating the other two, and we expect to wrap up the probes soon and submit them to the DPP,” Allaudeen (above) said this morning as quoted by Berita Harian.
Allaudeen spoke to reporters after the city police monthly assembly held at its headquarters.
According to another report by Kosmo!, the police commissioner said they have yet to arrest the suspects.
Nik Elin’s three police reports were made after she received several death threats over her constitutional challenge to provisions under the Kelantan syariah law.
They include threats to “sembelih” (slaughter) Nik Elin.
On Friday, a Federal Court bench of nine judges in an 8-1 majority decision allowed a petition by Nik Elin and her daughter Tengku Yasmin Nastasha Tengku Abdul Rahman to nullify 18 Kelantan syariah criminal provisions.
The court ruled that Kelantan’s legislature exceeded its state-making power contained in the State List (List II) of the Ninth Schedule of the Federal Constitution.
However, the apex court only allowed 16 out of the 18 to be invalidated.
Nik Elin and her daughter said they were not attacking the syariah system as many have pointed out after the apex court's ruling that 16 provisions in Kelantan criminal enactments are unconstitutional.
“The very important thing that we need to say is that the (challenged) syariah criminal enactment is takzir (manmade laws). It is not hudud. It is not qisas,” said Nik Elin. - Mkini
