Cops Arrest Man Over Flag Blunder In Penang
A man has been arrested over the upside-down Jalur Gemilang incident in Penang, said state acting police chief Alwi Zainal Abidin.
The investigation paper will be referred to the deputy public prosecutor tomorrow, along with proposed charges, he added.
"The Penang contingent confirms receiving 16 police reports nationwide related to the incident where the Jalur Gemilang was being flown upside down, involving 12 reports in Penang and four from outside the state," he said in a statement today.
Alwi also said the case is being investigated under Section 5 of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963, Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988.
The latest flag blunder went viral on social media yesterday after a Facebook user, under the name Nazirul Hafiz, posted a 20-second video in which a man is seen carrying the flag upside down on a pole, while another man records him.

It was then shared by Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh, who lambasted the individuals, calling them “traitors” to the country and urged the government to take action against them.
Akmal also said he had instructed youths in Penang and Umno Youth across the country to lodge police reports against this latest incident.

Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal SalehChinese-language daily Kwong Wah Yit Poh reported yesterday that the store owner, Feng Jin Zhen explained that he was measuring the length of an iron pole while hanging the national flag and did not notice that the flag was upside down.
Upon realising it was being flown upside down, Feng said he immediately corrected it.
He also said he was unaware the entire process had been filmed and uploaded to Facebook, and regretted that the video did not capture the part when the flag position was corrected. - Mkini
