(Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued an alert-level continuous rain warning for four states starting this Thursday.
In a statement today, MetMalaysia said continuous rain was expected in several areas in Kelantan and throughout Terengganu from Nov 16 to 18, Bernama reported.
“The areas involved in Kelantan are Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Kota Bharu, Jeli, Tanah Merah, Bachok, Pasir Puteh and Kuala Krai,” it said.
The department also said that continuous rain was expected in Pahang and Sabah from Nov 17 to 19.
“In Pahang, the areas involved are Jerantut, Kuantan and Pekan.
“In Sabah, it involves the west coast (Ranau and Kota Belud), Sandakan (Telupid, Kinabatangan, Beluran and Sandakan) and Kudat,” the statement said.
Terengganu menteri besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said the government had conducted a simulation exercise in preparation for potential floods during this northeast monsoon season.
He said the state government was also in constant communication with MetMalaysia to monitor the weather conditions.
“According to MetMalaysia forecast, the northeast monsoon season was supposed to begin last Saturday with heavy rain but, Alhamdulillah, it did not happen.
“However, we are always alert to any statements issued as a precautionary measure.
“We have already conducted a dry run at the grassroots level on how to deal with floods. We are prepared, but let us all pray that we do not face severe floods this time.”
MetMalaysia expects the monsoon season to last until March next year.
In Ipoh, 347 flood victims from 101 families are still housed at five relief centres in two districts this morning, compared to 349 people from 103 families last night.
The irrigation and drainage department reported that Sungai Bidor in Changkat Jong was at the warning level, with a reading of 3.46m.
