Complaints By Julau Pkr New Members Continue To Pour In
Complaints by people who were unwittingly registered as Julau PKR division members are continuing to emerge a week before the Sarawak-leg of the party’s internal election
Malaysiakini has sighted two police reports that were lodged recently by individuals claiming that they and several others were registered as PKR members without their knowledge
A source who showed Malaysiakini the police reports had requested that their names be redacted to protect them from potential harassment
A report lodged with the police in Sarikei on Nov 2 was by a farmer complaining that he found out that he and 10 friends were registered as Julau PKR division members without their consent
Malaysiakini had checked the details of the 11 individuals named in the report against PKR’s own online membership verification tool and found that all them were registered on the same date: June 27, 2018
Another report lodged with the Sibu Jaya police on Oct 29 was by a person claiming to be a Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) member who complained that he and two friends were registered as Julau PKR division members as well
Again, Malaysiakini checked their details against PKR’s website found that the trio was registered as party members on June 27, 2018
The date is significant because, as detailed by Malaysiakini in August, party records showed that the Julau PKR division had increased its membership by 12,946, or 2,147 percent, on that very day
Although PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution (photo) had affirmed that the cut-offdate for new members to be eligible to vote was June 26, the names of those registered on June 27 still appeared on the membership list used for the election
Meanwhile, The Borneo Post reported today that there were 37 members from the Meluan PRS division who were registered as Julau PKR division members without their knowledge
Meluan PRS division vice-chairperson Desmond Sunok was cited calling PKR “desperate and pathetic”
“We are certainly not amused by this desperate and pathetic action of PKR Julau. We strongly condemn it. Our loyalty to the party (PRS) is being made use of by some politicians in their unbridled haste to go high up,” he said.
In a related development, Julau MP Larry Sng (photo) told The Star that his office in Julau was raided by the MACC but declined to reveal reasons for the raid and what documents were seized
He said he was contacted by the MACC when the raid took place
Sng, who was once an assistant state minister during Taib Mahmud’s reign as Sarawak chief minister, joined PKR on May 11
He is currently challenging two-term Julau PKR division chief Semana Sawang and is vying for a seat on the party’s central leadership council (MPP)
Yesterday, Malaysiakini reported that the MACC had visited the PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya on Friday to collect evidence and arrested a party staff in charge of membership records. This marked the first time that the MACC has ever visited PKR’s headquarters
Speaking to Malaysiakini yesterday, Saifuddin claimed that it would appear that the authorities were being selective when it came to investigations related to the party elections
It is understood that the MACC’s investigation stemmed from a report lodged by Sarawak PKR information chief Vernon Albert Kedit, who affirmed a statutory declaration alleging that there was an attempt to cover up irregularities involving Julau PKR division’s membership list. - Mkini
