Commitment Transparency Needed To Achieve Mou Targets Says Mustapa
Economic affairs minister Mustapa Mohamed says there must be transparency if reforms take a longer time to achieve. (Bernama pic)KUALA LUMPUR: The government needs to be transparent on when reforms in the memorandum of understanding (MoU) it signed with Pakatan Harapan are going to be carried out.
Economic affairs minister Mustapa Mohamed said although more time may be needed to implement parliamentary reforms, it was necessary to make clear when any transformations underlined in the MoU were carried out.
“We need to be transparent if the development of the MoU is being carried out, or is slow (in being implemented).
“We must state it (clearly) to settle the issue,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat today.
The Jeli MP, commonly known as Tok Pa, also said there should be commitment from all parties to achieve the reforms and targets agreed by both sides.
The Bersatu MP was replying to an additional question by Anwar Ibrahim (PH-Port Dickson) who said Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob had commented that there was political stability after the signing of the MoU.
“We are unhappy as there is delay in the reforms. The improvements are not carried out (fast enough),” Anwar said.
“There have been no parliamentary reforms despite it being almost a month (since the MoU was signed).”
He also said there was no commitment on the reforms other than Ismail claiming that there was political stability in the country.
The MoU signed between the government and PH on Sept 13 was intended to end months of political instability, and to carry out parliamentary reforms and focus on the health and economic crises.
Earlier, Zakaria Edris (Bersatu-Libaran) asked in a supplementary question if political instability would negatively affect the five-year 12th Malaysia Plan.
In reply, Mustapa said there had been some level of political stability since the MoU was signed, allowing Putrajaya to focus on economic issues, including attracting investors and curbing the health crisis. - FMT
