Citizenship Laws Takiyuddin Accuses Govt Of Failing To Obtain Rulers Nod

Takiyuddin Hassan accused the government of failing to obtain approval from the Conference of Rulers before planning to amend the Federal Constitution on citizenship laws.
"We believe there are proposed amendments that lacked approval from the rulers," the opposition chief whip said in a press conference today held at the Parliament.
The PAS lawmaker further claimed that previously, the government had engagement sessions with the rulers on Oct 26, 2023, and Feb 24 this year on the amendments, but the dropped amendment was not included during the meetings.
Takiyuddin (above) said this after Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail tabled the amendment bill for a second reading but did not proceed with the debate after Dewan Rakyat speaker Johari Abdul adjourned the meeting.
Commenting further, the Kota Bharu MP also questioned Dewan Rakyat's rush to adjourn the meeting, claiming that government matters mentioned in the blue bill must be settled within the same session as stipulated in the standing order.
As such, Takiyuddin claimed the government was "scared" to continue with the debate session as the opposition had prepared 11 debaters to challenge the amendment bill.
Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail"The government is not serious about carrying out these constitutional amendments, regardless of whatever reasons they give, they are not serious," he added.
Two days ago, Perikatan Nasional expressed dissatisfaction over the government’s decision to drop the proposed amendment which would require foundlings to gain citizenship through registration and not by force of law.
At the time, Takiyuddin said the proposal briefed to PN MPs differed from the current state of the bill.
On Monday, Saifuddin tabled the first reading of the bill and said the second and third reading will also be presented in the same Parliamentary session, which concludes today.
This comes after the government agreed to drop the proposal which would deny automatic citizenship to foundlings. - Mkini
