Change Name Of Gig Workers Bill Says Shahril
Several gig economy platforms previously called for the draft Gig Workers Bill 2025 to be refined to ensure it is clear, practical, and can be implemented effectively.
PETALING JAYA: Former Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan has suggested that the name of a new legislation, called the Gig Workers Bill 2025, be changed to better reflect its protection for workers in the e-hailing and p-hailing sector.
Shahril said that a law to regulate all types of gig workers would include photographers, freelancers and social media influencers, rather than solely for the protection of riders and drivers of online delivery platforms, such as Shopee, Grab, Lalamove and Foodpanda.
“We should change the bill’s name from gig workers to something specific for e-hailing and p-hailing workers.
“Let’s not lump them together, because it will cause other problems later,” he said during his Keluar Sekejap podcast.
Transport think tank My Mobility Vision previously said the draft bill treats gig workers and freelancers as a homogeneous group, although their experiences differ considerably.
On Thursday, several gig economy platforms called for the draft Gig Workers Bill 2025 to be refined to ensure it is clear, practical, and can be implemented effectively.
Gig economy platforms such as Grab, Lalamove, and Shopee said without a clear and comprehensive implementation framework, there is a significant risk that the bill could unintentionally disrupt gig work.
The bill is expected to be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat next week.
Key aspects of the bill include the introduction of an official definition for gig workers, setting minimum compensation, creating a grievance mechanism, and social security protection such as mandatory contributions to the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso). - FMT
