Bravery Isn T Job Description For Macc Chief Zaid Tells Anwar
Zaid Ibrahim believes Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim misjudged what qualifies Azam Baki as the ideal candidate to lead the MACC.
ADSResponding to Anwar’s assertion that “there is none braver” than the current chief commissioner, the former law minister said courage is not the right metric for the role.
“The correct words are suitable, comfortable, or amenable. The job does not need bravery or courage,” he said in a social media post.
Noting that the MACC chief commissioner holds a powerful position, Zaid (above) drew a comparison between Azam and the late Herbert Hoover, who led the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) during the 1960s.

MACC chief commissioner Azam BakiHe remarked that the famed FBI chief wielded enough influence to instil fear not only among ordinary citizens but also top political leaders.
“Azam has immense powers to freeze accounts for 90 days. That’s a long time. It can destroy businesses and families without any court order, remand suspects with little difficulty, and compel asset declarations without telling you what predicate offence they are investigating.
“MACC’s job security depends entirely on how the prime minister feels about your prioritisation of cases. It’s a lucrative, cushy job, and many people are willing to have it.
“So please don’t say there is no one braver than Azam,” he added.

Anwar had defended his reappointment of Azam for a third time, which courted backlash from various quarters, including the prime minister’s own daughter, Nurul Izzah.
The prime minister, whose coalition Pakatan Harapan had been critical of the MACC chief when in the opposition, claimed that Azam has demonstrated “extraordinary courage” in tackling high-level corruption cases. - Mkini
