Blind Baby Comes Too As Single Mum Goes On Delivery Runs
Nur Ainul Zahira Rashidi’s laughter and smile motivates her mother Azimah Abd Rahim to work hard to put food on the table.KUALA LUMPUR: Single mother Azimah Abd Rahim has to brave a gauntlet of angry glares and criticism every day as she rides through city traffic with her five-year-old daughter clinging to her chest, as she goes from place to place to make food deliveries.
Azimah, 37, from Kampung Haji Abdullah Hukum does not have a choice. There is no one to help look after her disabled child, who was born blind but is also extremely active.
“I don’t know who can take care of her along with her antics. Other people really can’t stand looking after her,” she told FMT.
“Once, I found bruises on her body during a week that I sent her to a babysitter,” Azimah said. She is uncertain if the bruises were inflicted by someone or caused by a fall. “I’m now scared (of sending my child to a babysitter), so I bring her along when I work.”
Azimah Abd Rahim could not hold back her tears as she spoke of her struggles to find a babysitter to look after her 5-year-old.Azimah said she was aware of the glares that other road users would give her as she rides through city traffic, but is forced to brave the criticism in order to put food on the table.
“I got into an accident last week, but only I was hurt, my daughter was fine. I was trying to avoid a speeding car but I hit a pothole.”
She is still trying her best to look for a babysitter willing to take care of Nur Ainul Zahira Rashidi while she is at work.
Azimah’s story had drawn the attention of many as people came to her aid, including celebrity preacher Ebit Lew who rented a house for the pair while they wait to move into a low-cost housing unit which the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council helped her to rent.
The welfare department has also increased its monthly aid for Azimah and placed Ainul in a Community Rehabilitation Centre where disabled children receive early childhood education.
Nur Ainul Zahira Rashidi is blind and also extremely active, making it difficult for babysitters to look after her well.Ainul has been following the programme for a week now, staying in class from morning until noon. But once Ainul’s class is over, Azimah goes back to carrying her daughter with her as she delivers food.
As long as there is no one who can help take good care of Ainul while she heads out to earn some money, Azimah can only pray for the safety of her daughter and herself.
Members of the public who would like to lend a helping hand to Azimah may contact her at 019-2409380. They can also channel financial aid through her Bank Islam account, No. 14180020200310. - FMT
