(Facebook pic)PETALING JAYA: A Bersatu MP has expressed support for both party president Muhyiddin Yassin and deputy Hamzah Zainudin, following a high-profile meeting at Muhyiddin’s home last night
Rompin MP Abdul Khalib Abdullah is the first to say he supports both men, following the meeting of the party’s MPs where they expressed full support for their president.
Khalid said the meeting focussed on “current developments, bolstering consensus, and strengthening the direction of the party’s struggle”.
He said the meeting proved that Bersatu leaders held fast to upholding party discipline and its fundamental values.
“On behalf of my other Bersatu MP friends … we continue to stand fast with the Bersatu president, deputy president and top leadership who have been entrusted with leading the party.
“This confidence stems from our shared commitment to ensuring the party remains strong, organised, and prepared to face current political challenges,” he said in a statement.
Khalib said harmony and unity among the MPs would further bolster Bersatu as well as Perikatan Nasional in serving as a constructive and principled opposition bloc.
Nineteen Bersatu MPs, including Muhyiddin, convened at the former prime minister’s home last night for a high-profile meeting amid an apparent leadership tussle with Hamzah.
A viral letter calling for Hamzah’s removal as Bersatu deputy president and opposition leader made its rounds hours before the meeting convened, sparking speculation that the matter would be discussed at the gathering.
Muhyiddin later said all 18 MPs stated their backing for him as Bersatu president, while Sabak Bernam MP Kalam Salan said there were no discussions about replacing Hamzah as the opposition leader at the meeting.
Bersatu has been facing escalating tensions following the sacking of Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan and the suspension of Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal, amid an apparent leadership feud between Muhyiddin and Hamzah.
Several leaders purportedly aligned with Hamzah, including Indera Mahkota MP Saifuddin Abdullah, have since called for Muhyiddin to step down as Bersatu president. - FMT
