Bds Malaysia Stop Filling Up At Caltex As Its Parent Company Chevron Fuels Palestinian Genocide
CALTEX, the petrol brand name of Chevron Corp in the Asia-Pacific region, the Middle East and Southern Africa, has become the latest boycott target of BDS Malaysia, the Malaysian chapter of the global Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) Movement.
“Chevron’s extraction activities generate billions of dollars in revenue for apartheid Israel and its war chest,” justified BDS Malaysia in its social media post on the X platform.
“(This) helps to fund the on-going genocide against 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza as well as its regime of settler-colonialism, apartheid and military occupation. Chevron also fuels environmental devastation.”
There are more than 450 Caltex stations at strategic locations across Peninsular Malaysia, according to Caltex Malaysia’s website.
Prior to its boycott call on Caltex which is derived from “California Texas Oil Co Ltd”, the global BDS movement had 48 hours earlier declared its boycott of sportwear giant adidas over the company’s “racist, anti-Palestinian decision” to drop Bella Hadid, an American fashion model of Palestinian descent, from its latest sneaker campaign.
Apparently, the boycott call was successful as Adidas’ brand sentiments plummeted. According to media intelligence firm CARMA, the brand saw over 400% jump in negative social media conversations.
Adidas’ market sentiments currently stand at 8.9% positive and 45.5% negative. Before dropping Hadid, it was 35% positive and 8% negative, CARMA told MARKETING-INTERACTIVE.
CARMA noted that online users criticised Adidas for what they perceive as bowing to political pressure which in turn amplified calls for a boycott of the brand.
Companies that are currently in the BDS Malaysia boycott list include Airbnb, Hewlett Packard (HP), Puma, Hyundai Heavy Industries Co Ltd, Ahava Dead Sea Laboratories, Caterpillar, AXA and G4S (world’s biggest security form).
