Ayer Kuning Voters Reject Politics Of Fear And Hatred Says Asyraf
(NST) – Voters in Ayer Kuning have demonstrated political maturity by refusing to be swayed by fear-mongering tactics suggesting that Islam or Malay rights are under threat.
Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the by-election victory reflected the people’s growing rejection of politics based on hatred, racial provocation, and hostility.
“We are continuing our success after Nenggiri, Mahkota, and now Ayer Kuning. What’s even more interesting is that we have proven that the people actually reject politics based on hatred, hostility, cursing, and extreme racial sentiments.
“We want to advocate for an era that demands political maturity at its highest level.
“We can have differing views and offer our own plans for the people, but never to the extent of slandering, cursing, belittling the opposition, or creating discomfort, especially by playing on racial sentiments,” he said.
He was speaking to reporters after the announcement of the official result of the Ayer Kuning by-election at Dewan Merdeka, Tapah, here tonight.
Earlier, Barisan Nasional (BN) defended the Ayer Kuning state seat after its candidate, Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir, defeated Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate Abd Muhaimin Malek and Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) candidate K.S. Bawani.
Mohamad Yusri secured a large majority of 5,006 votes in the by-election. He garnered 11,065 votes, while Abd Muhaimin received 6,059 votes and Bawani 1,106 votes.
Asyraf said Ayer Kuning is a symbol and reflection of Malaysia’s diverse demographics, comprising Malays, a significant number of Chinese, Indians, indigenous people, and others.
“So what does it reflect? It reflects the people’s desire for mature and wise politics, considering the existing diversity.
“But we must never forget the core and foundation of Islam as the religion of the Federation, nor should the position of the Malays and Bumiputera be questioned.
“Today, we have won with a large majority. Of the four district polling centres (PDMs) previously won by PAS, we have reclaimed three, and we also reduced the majority in areas where we lost, such as Tanjung Keramat.
“This decision proves that the unity government model is the best model for Malaysia,” he said.
When asked if this indicated voters’ growing trust in PH and BN, Asyraf said it was clear, otherwise the coalition would not have received more than 11,000 votes.
“Secondly, we would not have won in PDMs where the majority of voters are Chinese. These seven PDMs have a Chinese-majority electorate.
“We also would not have succeeded in areas previously secured by Pas. This shows that Malays are returning to support Umno and Barisan Nasional.
“It shows they are not swayed by campaigns of hatred, cursing, and spreading lies about Islam being threatened or the position of the Malays being at risk,” he said.
