Anwar Vs Daim Legal Action Or Political Vengeance

The Malaysian political arena is once again heating up not because of the economy, not because of unity government tensions but because Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has finally made a move on Tun Daim Zainuddin, the elusive billionaire and former finance minister.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) recently announced the seizure of Daim’s family assets, claiming it was to prevent disposal during investigations. On paper, it’s just standard procedure under Section 38(1) of the MACC Act. But Malaysians aren’t naïve.
Everyone knows this isn’t just about the law. It’s about power.
Old Wounds, New War
The animosity between Anwar and Daim isn’t new. It traces back to the 1990s when Anwar was Mahathir’s heir-apparent and Daim was said the quiet kingmaker behind the scenes. It was Daim’s world then. And Anwar? Just a rising star who needed to be cut down.
The events that followed, Anwar’s sacking, his black eye, the infamous sodomy trials, all unfolded under the shadow of the old elite, of which Daim was blame as the key architect.
Now, three decades later, Anwar is in charge. And with Daim no longer protected by political office, the hunter has become the hunted.
Anwar came to power with one promise, to clean up Malaysia. To “reform,” to fight corruption, to restore faith in institutions. Going after Tun Daim, one of the most secretive and wealthy political insiders, allows Anwar to claim he’s making good on that promise.
But the rakyat sees something else too: selective enforcement.
Where is the same aggression against GLC-linked cronies?
Where is MACC when it comes to questionable contracts and appointments under this administration?
You can’t cherry-pick justice. You can’t use SPRM as a weapon and still claim moral high ground.
Let’s not pretend this has nothing to do with Mahathir Mohamad.
Daim is more than just an individual, he’s the final surviving pillar of Mahathirism. And now, just as Mahathir launches his latest call for a “payung besar” Malay unity coalition, Anwar’s team swoops in and seizes Daim’s assets.
Coincidence? Highly doubtful.
This is political chess, and Anwar is clearing the board before GE16, before Perikatan gains steam, and before Mahathir’s shadow grows any longer.
What’s perhaps most deafening is the silence from UMNO’s leadership.
While Anwar faces a civil suit from Yusoff Rawther, while he files appeals and invokes immunity, not a single top UMNO leader has spoken up. No support, no defense, no questions.
But now Mahathir is calling them to join his camp under a new Malay umbrella.
Why would they? When their silence already suggests they’ve made peace with Anwar’s rule or at least fear what speaking out might cost them.
So, Is This Justice or Just a Show?
If Anwar is serious about cleaning up corruption, the people expect consistency, not theatrics.
If Daim is truly guilty, charge him don’t just parade asset seizures for headlines.
And if this is just political revenge, don’t insult the rakyat’s intelligence by calling it reform.
Because Malaysians are watching. And this time, they’ve seen this movie before.
