Anwar To Take On Former Allies In Selangor Campaign Blitz
STATE POLLS | Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will have three back-to-back campaigning events in Selangor tonight in areas linked to former PKR members who defected to Perikatan Nasional.
Two of the three events will be held in Bukit Antarabangsa and Hulu Kelang, seats linked to his former PKR deputy president Azmin Ali.
Anwar will be attending a ceramah at 10pm at the Ukay Perdana night market in Ampang, which is under the Bukit Antarabangsa seat, followed by another ceramah at 11pm at the Padang Taman Permata in Hulu Kelang.
Azmin served the Bukit Antarabangsa for three terms since 2008 but decided not to defend his incumbency in this state polls.
Instead, the Selangor PN chairperson is going up against PKR candidate Juwairiya Zulkifli in Hulu Kelang.
PN garnered a dismal number of votes in Bukit Antarabangsa compared to Hulu Kelang in the last general election.
Though Azmin used to be Anwar’s right-hand man, the two had a rocky relationship for several years when the former was still in PKR, with the party being split into Anwar loyalists and Azmin supporters.
This internal conflict culminated in Azmin and several of his supporters defecting from PKR during the infamous Sheraton Move in February 2020, paving the way for PN to take over the federal government from Pakatan Harapan at the time. Azmin has since joined Bersatu.
Besides the two events in Bukit Antarabangsa and Hulu Kelang, Anwar will also be attending a ceramah for the Taman Medan seat at the Dataran Anak Muda in Petaling Jaya.
Taman Medan is being contested by PN’s candidate Dr Afif Bahardin and Harapan’s Ahmad Akhir Pawan Chik.
Afif, a known associate of Azmin, was previously the elected representative for Seberang Jaya in Penang for two terms from 2013.
While he did not quit PKR during the Sheraton Move, he joined Azmin in Bersatu a few months later in June 2020. - Mkini
