Gerak said Ezam Mohd Nor will be a serious challenger to Dr Mahathir Mohamad for the Langkawi seat.PETALING JAYA: Ezam Mohd Nor, a former political secretary to PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, is expected to challenge Dr Mahathir Mohamad for the Langkawi parliamentary seat in the coming general election (GE15).
Ezam will contest either as an independent candidate or with any party willing to take him on their ticket, the Pertubuhan Perubahan Rakyat Malaysia (Gerak) organisation said.
Gerak secretary-general Syed Putra Syed Isa said various people had urged the group to field someone against Mahathir in Langkawi.
Mahathir, then representing Pakatan Harapan, was elected MP for Langkawi in 2018 by a majority of almost 8,900 votes against Nawawi Ahmad of BN and Zubir Ahmad of PAS.

He is now chairman of Pejuang, having left Bersatu in early 2020.
Gerak said it was their responsibility to field a serious contender against Mahathir, whom they described as a threat to the implementation of reforms in the country.
Ezam, who is Gerak’s chairman, agreed with the group’s decision that he should contest against the former prime minister.
Syed Putra said Gerak’s election machinery, especially in Kedah, has been instructed to make immediate preparations (for the campaign).
Syed Putra said Ezem is expected to publicly announce the matter when Gerak launches its GE15 volunteer machinery tomorrow.
Ezam, who also leads the pro-Anwar group Gerakan Reformasi 98 (Gerak98), confirmed with FMT that he will be contesting the Langkawi seat.
He had previously said he would take on PKR vice-president Amirudin Shari in the Sungai Tua state seat if the Selangor menteri besar was nominated to defend his seat.
He had urged Amirudin and eight other Selangor PKR assemblymen not to contest in the general election, citing their previous links to former party deputy president Azmin Ali. - FMT
