Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s recent visit to Batu Caves was nothing short of theatrical.
His so-called “appearance” looked more like a political gambit than an earnest gesture towards the Indian community in view of the elections to be held in 2026 after assuming the Asean chairmanship, which he has started on the wrong foot.
It was clear that the primary aim was to secure votes, but the manner in which it was done raised more than a few eyebrows.
Anwar drove up with a whole line of police officers and made a brief, 30-minute stop at the hall in an almost mechanical and impersonal affair.
His behaviour was a textbook example of status signalling, a display of power and authority with little regard for genuine relationships or engagement.
Not only did he skip the visit to the Dhevasthanam office, but his lack of effort to honour the community spoke volumes about his appreciation for the Indian community.
The treatment of the Indian community in this case is nothing less than disrespectful. We are not asking for grand promises or impossible favours, but simply the basic dignity of being recognised as an integral part of the Malaysian fabric.
The Indian community deserves far more than this aloof, almost disdainful approach. Respect is not a luxury; it’s the minimum we should expect as citizens of this nation.
