Anwar Pledges Reforms To Keep Parliament Free Of Interference

(PMO pic)KUALA LUMPUR: The government remains steadfast in ensuring that Parliament is free from executive authority through reforms to strengthen constitutional democracy, said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) today, he said the Madani government is also adamant about enhancing transparency in the administration of Parliament.
“Parliament is a crucial institution in any country and serves as a check and balance against the executive power of the government,” he said, Bernama reported.
He said the government had taken measures to initiate the parliamentary reform agenda through the Prime Minister’s Question Time session, the Auditor-General’s Report debate, the Human Rights Commission Report debate and the improvement of the Special Chamber proceedings.
Anwar said he received a courtesy call from Senate president Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul and law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said today.
He said they exchanged views and discussed the agenda related to the policy proposals to draft the Parliamentary Services Bill.
Politicians have lobbied for the restoration of the Parliamentary Services Act 1963, which was repealed in 1993. The Act had provided for Parliament to conduct its own administration, staffing and financing independently of the government.
At present, staff and maintenance matters are handled by the public services department and the Treasury. - FMT
