Anwar Confirms Sarawak Governor Candidate Submitted To Agong
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirms that a candidate has been submitted to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for the Sarawak governor position.
He said Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg decided on the candidate, however, the prime minister stopped short of naming the nominee.
"It may be announced in the next day or two," he told reporters today.
Malaysiakini previously reported that Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar resigned from his post as Dewan Negara president to assume the Sarawak governor position.
Anwar also confirmed that the Dewan Negara president position was vacant.
"We will discuss this in the unity government secretariat meeting tonight so that the appointment can be expedited," he added.
Wan Junaidi to replace Taib?
The swearing-in ceremony for the Sarawak governor post is slated to be held on Jan 29, The New Straits Times reported.
Earlier, The Malaysian Insight reported that Wan Junaidi was set to succeed Abdul Taib Mahmud as the eighth Sarawak governor.
An aide to Wan Junaidi reportedly said the former minister may issue an official statement on the matter.

Taib has served as Sarawak governor for three terms, starting in 2014 after he stepped down as chief minister.
