Tan Sri Annuar Musa hits out at Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah over the veteran Umno man’s letter to the Dewan Rakyat Speaker, urging for a no-confidence motion against the Prime Minister to be expedited. -NSTP/File picPUTRAJAYA: Tan Sri Annuar Musa took a swipe at Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah today over the veteran Umno man's letter to the Dewan Rakyat Speaker, urging for a no-confidence motion against the Prime Minister to be expedited.
The Ketereh MP said while Razaleigh or Ku Li, had every right as an MP to seek a motion, the Speaker had a responsibility to carry out his duties based on existing rules.
"As a long-time MP, I understand this. As such, I will not ask for something which I know the answer to," he told a press conference.
The letter to Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun at the end of September sought an explanation why the no-confidence motion was not debated in the Dewan Rakyat during the previous Parliament session between July 13 and August 27.
Azhar responded to Ku Li saying that a no-confidence motion would not be sped up if it was not received by a minister.
He added that any motion made and informed to the Speaker or the Dewan Rakyat secretary which was in line with the Standing Orders would be duly carried out in accordance with the law.
Annuar also said he was disappointed over what he deemed as a "fixation among veteran political figures" to jockey for positions and power, instead of focusing on the public's welfare, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic and the economic problems it brought.
"I speak as the Ketereh MP, I feel it is important for everyone to look after the people.
"I feel too many of us think of who should get what position and what (kind of) power. Too few of us talk about what the people or the poor are facing, especially now with the pandemic," the Barisan Nasional (BN) secretary-general said, referring to a statement he made on social media yesterday.
Annuar said as part of the ruling government it was crucial for its members to carry out their duties at such a critical juncture.
"Whatever (jockeying) happens, it should not trouble the people, nor cause investors to lose confidence, among others.
"We are entitled to renegotiate our position from time to time, as it is everyone's right. There is unhappiness all the time but I am confused why they are arguing about positions and power when lives are at stake and the stock market is down. I don't think we are doing justice to the people," he said.
He said emphasis should be on stabilising national politics, strengthening Malay unity as the basis of that stability, to save lives from the threat of Covid-19, and to restore the national economy and relieve the rakyat off their burden.
"The instability that we are seeing today is due to the division in Malay politics from even before the 14th general election (GE14).
"Haven't we realised what has happened so far? Do we want to change the PM thrice in a year... who stands to benefit?
"The important thing is to think about the people but unfortunately those who were given a big mandate by the people and have long experience in politics are more enthusiastic about positions than serving the people." - NST
