Airasia S Cabin Crew Hijab Option Applauded But Can The Blazer Be Longer To Butt Length Ah

MUSLIMS in general have joined Religious Affairs Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar in praising budget carrier AirAsia to grant “freedom of choice” to its Muslim air stewardesses to don a headscarf and full tailored suit instead of its signature red fitted, knee-length skirt.
This is given many have least expected the airline “to make such a bold and brave decision”.

But a random gauge on social media platforms showcases requests from some modest fashion-conscious women folks if a tad of improvisation can be considered to “loosen up the blazer to buttock length like the police uniform”.
Their reasoning is not only that this does not only “disrupt the scope of duty” but “looks more decent to suit hijab wearers”.

However, some reminded fellow commenters against pushing their luck too far by demanding for a looser fitting given one should already be grateful that allowing the cabin crew to present themselves in hijab is already a blessing “lest one opens his/her airline company”.

One learned commenter went on to explain that the uniform of airline crew plays an important role during emergency situation in the sky.
“If flight staff wear jubah (robe)/loose clothing, it may be difficult for them to move around to provide safety assistance quickly and effectively,” he aptly justified.

Editor’s Note: Set to begin in 1Q 2026 – specifically during Ramadan – the hijab initiative reflects AirAsia’s commitment to ensuring every crew member feels comfortable and confident in carrying out their duties.
Crew members who choose the hijab will wear a full, tailored suit featuring long sleeves and pants to maintain AirAsia’s professional look. AirAsia expects such policy to open the doors for a more diverse pool of talent to join the team.
Currently, nearly 40% of AirAsia’s female Muslim crew – from both AirAsia Malaysia and AirAsia X – have expressed interest in adopting the hijab.
Now it seems that the onus is on flag carrier Malaysia Airlines (MAS) to re-consider its iconic sarong kebaya uniform which has often come under fire from the rightist fraternity.

While Muslims wholeheartedly welcomed AirAsia’s freedom of choice for its female crew to don the hijab on flights, a non-Muslim interestingly urged for self-constraint from making insensitive comments about the hijab initiative.
“This is a positive step for their Muslim air stewardesses whether current or future employees,” he pleaded. “Let’s take this as an opportunity to understand and respect the needs of our fellow Muslim Malaysians.”

His reminder was not far-fetched as non-Muslims seem to have a different perspective of the exercise:

But the bottom line that everyone will agree is that while the air crew can wear what their heart desires, it is imperative that “the quality and punctuality of the airline” are never compromised.
