A Startup Guide And Recruitment Journey For A New Business Entity
As you probably know, the people you work with especially when it comes to startups can be the tipping point of what makes your idea turn into reality. As a result, it’s very important to make sure that the workforce that you hire are motivated and excited bright people which are willing to put the time and effort in order to help you in your journey to success.
There are many websites on the internet on which you can search for your team. Sites such as Startup Jobs, Zealify and Workinstartups are just a few places where people who are seeking to find work in a startup can be recruited. There are also a number of recruitment agencies which you could work with to help you such as Michael Page, Reeracoen and Randstad. This would be the traditional approach to hiring. However, you can also let people know that you are looking for people to join your team on social media platforms or with the Department of Labour Malaysia.
From what I have learnt, finding people to send in their resumes and CVs is not the difficult part when it comes to recruitment. What is more challenging however is filtering and picking the right people for you and your startup. As a result I’ve made a list of common hiring mistakes done by entrepreneurs.
Here are some of these mistakes and tips on how to avoid them:
Hiring friends (note: not always a mistake but a mistake 90% of the time). This usually is a mistake made by first time entrepreneurs when they start a business - who to trust? How do you know the person you’re bringing in is good? Friends seem like the good first pick, but beware - it can end up hurting both the business and the relationship.Hiring someone solely based on cost. We know you are bootstrapped and its difficult to find people who will work for little or no money. But skill set, motivation, personality and passion for the idea are more important criteria than money. Be patient and keep looking… Don’t settle on hiring! Not hiring people that have diverse enough skills. You want to have your team complement each other. Don’t hire only extroverts, don’t hire only sales people, don’t hire only marketing people - I’m generalising but don’t hire people that all have the same skill set. Different people bring different things to the table, which you need!Hope this helps and good luck on your startup and recruitment journey! - ck
