Sabah Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said as of yesterday, 30.1 per cent of Sabah's adult population had completed two doses of the vaccine while 52.4 per cent had taken their first jab.- STR/MOHD ADAM ARININKOTA KINABALU: Sabah is expected to achieve herd immunity soon after surpassing its 30 per cent vaccination target among adults in the state.
Sabah Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said as of yesterday, 30.1 per cent of Sabah's adult population had completed two doses of the vaccine while 52.4 per cent had taken their first jab.
The Sabah government had set a target of reaching 60 per cent full inoculation of its adult population by Sept 21 and aspires to reach herd immunity as early as Oct 31.
The state had been focused on increasing its vaccination rate and restricting most movements to only those who are fully vaccinated to contain the chain of infection.
Today, Sabah recorded 2,474 new Covid-19 infections but more than half of the cases were backlogs.
"Of the total registered cases, 311 or 12.6 per cent were backlogs of over five days, 254 cases (10.7 per cent) between four and five days and 1,102 cases (44.5 per cent) were registered after two to three days," he said in a statement.
Masidi said close contact screening was the largest contributor to the caseload with 1,609 cases or 65.04 per cent.
This was followed by 557 cases (22.51 per cent) from symptomatic screenings, 152 cases from other categories, 140 cases from existing clusters, and 16 cases from targeted screenings.
Masidi said 1,587 of the new Covid-19 patients fell under Category 2, 823 under Category 1, 10 under Category 3, and eight under Category 5.
No new clusters were reported but the state registered 25 fatalities – 12 in Kota Kinabalu, three in Tawau, two each in Papar, Beaufort and Putatan, and one each in Keningau and Tambunan.
Meanwhile, 1,743 patients recovered (cumulatively 98,774), while 4,774 patients are undergoing treatment at hospital, temporary detention centres and private facilities, among others. - NST
