23 Pn Reps Visit Kg Sungai Baru To Hear Villagers Grouses
Twenty-three Perikatan Nasional MPs visited residents of Kampung Sungai Baru, Kuala Lumpur, today amid the ongoing land acquisition controversy in the area.
Led by opposition leader and Larut MP Hamzah Zainudin, the 3pm visit aimed at hearing directly from affected residents and receiving briefings on the situation.
Presentations were delivered by the Kampung Sungai Baru pro-tem committee chairperson Zainab Alias, resident representative Rafidah Ibrahim, and independent property researcher Muzaffar Razman.
In his speech, Hamzah pledged to raise the issue in the upcoming Dewan Rakyat sitting, describing the visit as a collective effort to find the best resolution for residents.
“I’m honestly confused about what’s really happening here.
“But during my time studying at UTM, I was close to a family from here and I often visited them. They have passed away, but that connection made me feel strongly about helping.
“This isn’t just the responsibility of MPs - it’s our shared duty to support the people in reclaiming their land, whether through political or legal means,” he said.
Also present were PAS deputy president and Kubang Kerian MP Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, Bagan Serai MP Idris Ahmad, Putrajaya MP Radzi Jidin, Alor Setar MP Afnan Hamimi, and Padang Serai MP Azman Nasruddin - who also chairs PN’s Federal Territories portfolio.
Putra president Ibrahim Ali also joined the visit.
Picket proposal rejected
Previously, Malaysiakini reported that some Kampung Sungai Baru residents refused to relocate not just over compensation but to protect family heritage homes.
According to The Vibes, the redevelopment began in 2016 with the consent of 260 residents but was halted when 37 objected.
ADSThe developer then invoked the Land Acquisition Act 1960 to proceed.
Malaysiakini reported that 219 owners have since relented, while 109 continue to defend their rights.
During a question-and-answer session, Ibrahim proposed a picket and camping protest outside Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s residence or office.

However, the idea was rejected by residents as many of them are senior citizens.
“Tok Him’s idea is good, we don’t deny that but most of us here are senior citizens,” said Rafidah.
She highlighted the hardships they would face if they were to occupy the space outside the Prime Minister’s Office or residence, while keeping up with hospital appointments and health issues like diabetes.
Land status
Zainab Alias also claimed that several former ministers and MPs sided with the developer - including Annuar Musa, Shahidan Kassim, and then-Titiwangsa MP Rina Harun.
“We’ve given so much time and no elected representative came to meet us. What saddens me is that Rina could also side with the developer- our land, and she supported (the developer) - I’m angry.
“I’ll name another one, the then-federal territories minister, Annuar Musa, and after that, I met with Shahidan Kassim,” she said.

Zainab also emphasised that the village land had been gazetted as Malay Reserved Land (Malay Agricultural Settlement - MAS).
As such, she demanded an official explanation from Federal Territories Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa.
“If the minister (Zaliha) says the land here is not MAS status, then show us the proof.
“Because we have the proof, and that’s why we dared to file an affidavit,” she said. - Mkini
