20 Selangor Council Posts Still Open To Bn Exco
Twenty local councillor positions across 12 local authorities in Selangor are still open to BN, said Local Government and Tourism Exco Ng Suee Lim.
This is despite Selangor Umno rejecting the 20 state local council posts offered by the state Pakatan Harapan administration.
“Although councillors in 11 local authorities have already been sworn in, there are still vacancies for BN and its components.
“The vacancies do not necessarily need to be filled immediately, they can be filled in the future," he was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia today.
On Jan 16, Malaysiakini reported that the Selangor state government was unable to complete the appointment of councillors involving 12 local authorities for the 2024-2025 session.
According to an internal state government source, Umno’s refusal to accept Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari’s offer of 20 seats has complicated the appointment of 272 new council members.
Selangor Umno had initially asked for more than the 20 local council posts offered, but later returned them.
In return, its chief Megat Zulkarnain Omardin had said that it wanted 373 posts at the Village Development and Security Committee throughout the state.
‘We respect their request’
Commenting on this at a press conference today, Ng said that he respected Selangor Umno’s views.
“We are a new coalition. It has only been over a year that we are comrades in arms, there are many things to refine and discuss.
“Each has different backgrounds and cultures. The requests from their supporters to their component parties are different,” he said.
However, he said that the matter should be brought to Selangor Harapan as well as BN, to later be decided by Amirudin (above).
“There is no one solution for all, but when we make a decision we will find a solution that can satisfy everyone as best as possible.
“I don’t want to explain whether their request is justified or not, (but) we respect it,” he added.
Meanwhile, Ng explained the delay of the swearing-in ceremony of new councillors in Klang was delayed due to its upgrade from municipality to city status.
He said that the delay was necessary because of preparations needed for the upgrade.
Out of the 12 Selangor local authorities, Klang remains the only one yet to swear in their councillors for the 2024-2025 term. - Mkini
