1mdb Asset Recovery To Continue Amid Trump Closing Us Doj Unit
Malaysia’s ongoing efforts to recover assets linked to the 1MDB scandal will continue despite a recent closure of the US Department of Justice’s (DOJ) elite anti-corruption unit.
ADSMACC chief Azam Baki expressed optimism that US President Donald Trump’s decision will not affect ongoing cooperation.
“I am hopeful that the decision will not impact our efforts to recover the stolen assets from the US and some other countries.
“The authorities in the US have been extremely helpful to us since the investigation into 1MDB began.
“Officials from both countries continue to provide updates, particularly regarding the progress of asset recovery and other matters related to the investigation,” Azam (above) told Malaysiakini.

Earlier this week, investigative journalist Bradley Hope - co-author of the “Billion Dollar Whale” true-crime thriller on the US$4.5 billion 1MDB scandal - revealed that the US DOJ had closed its elite anti-corruption unit.
Hope said new US Attorney-General Pam Bondi had quietly announced, via email on Feb 5, the decision to close the unit famous for prosecuting the 1MDB scandal.

“We continue to cooperate with the authorities, and I will inquire with the Foreign Ministry to determine whether they have initiated any requests to the US Embassy regarding this matter,” he added.
Apart from uncovering the 1MDB scandal involving former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak, the US DOJ unit had also investigated former Nigerian dictator Sani Abacha’s enormous wealth. - Mkini
