Why Reveal Arrest Of Officers Only After Remand Ended Puad Asks Macc
Umno supreme council member Puad Zarkashi asks if there was some sort of conspiracy or cover-up, saying the police should be investigating the case instead. (Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: An Umno Supreme Council member has questioned why the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) only revealed the arrest of three of its officers after the remand period had ended.
This comes after the MACC released a statement yesterday to say that three senior officers had been arrested to assist in an investigation into allegations of abuse of power and malpractice in the case involving “a former department head”.
In a Facebook post, Puad Zarkashi called the timing of the statement “strange”.
“MACC issued a media statement that three of its senior officers were remanded only after the remand period of Sept 14-19 had ended.
“During that period, there was no news and no pictures of their detention, let alone the reason they were remanded. With other offenders, pictures of them handcuffed in orange shirts will be published,” he said.
Thus, the Umno supreme council member questioned if this suggested some sort of conspiracy was afoot.
“Is there a cover-up? Also, the stolen money should be investigated by the police and not be subject to an internal investigation by the MACC,” he said.
Puad stressed that MPs have a duty to demand the transparency of the commission, and wondered why such a reform was not part of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the government and Pakatan Harapan.
The blog, Edisi Siasat, had previously claimed that former director-general of the Malaysian External Intelligence Organisation (MEIO), Hasanah Abdul Hamid tried to reclaim USD6 million (RM25.1 million) in cash that was seized from an apartment in Cyberjaya after she was granted a discharge not amounting to acquittal for court charges against her in April.
According to the blog, Hasanah claimed that some of the money was missing and had been replaced with counterfeit notes. - FMT
