We Can Quarrel On Other Issues But Let S Unite For Budget 2021 Zafrul
BUDGET 2021 | Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz ended his presentation of Budget 2021 in the Dewan Rakyat today with an appeal for unity amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
"We can quarrel and have differing views on side matters, but let us cooperate on the fundamental issues.
If previously we could unanimously agree on the setting up of the Covid-19 Fund, many within and outside of this august House hope that this budget can bear witness to our unity for the sake of the people," he said.
Zafrul said this fitted Budget 2021's theme of Teguh Kita, Menang Bersama (In our strength lies our collective victory).
He also made a similar appeal at the beginning of his speech by citing the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's call for MPs to close ranks.
"His Majesty had conveyed his advice as food for thought. His Majesty reminded everyone to set aside their differences and unite to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.
"The government appreciates the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong's decree and support that Budget 2021 is of utmost importance to maintain the people and country's well-being," he said.
Zafrul urged MPs to embrace the spirit of unity with regard to Budget 2021.
The finance minister's call comes amid uncertainty whether Budget 2021 will be passed by the House.
Muhyiddin only commands the support of 113 MPs in the 222-member Dewan Rakyat, a razor-thin majority that can collapse if three MPs defect.
This is aggravated by Umno's recent tantrum during which it had threatened to withdraw from the ruling coalition if it was not offered a new deal.
The Budget today saw a slew of expanded aid packages for various segments of society to help them cope with the economic downturn brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic.
This was despite a significant drop in government revenue. The expansionary budget will be funded through increased borrowings.
Zafrul also gave several examples of how the people could benefit from Budget 2021, giving the illustrative examples of "Puan Aisyah", "Encik Kevin" and "Encik Vijay".
He said if Puan Aisyah who comes from a poor family makes RM1,000 a month with four children, the various aid she will receive under Budget 2021 would amount to RM13,000. - Mkini
