(Bernama pic)KLUANG: Wildlife rangers are tracking a herd of elephants which have been spotted at a residential settlement in Taman Sri Lambak here, causing the 500 residents to fear for their safety.
A resident, N Muniammah, 62, said two elephants had recently entered the parking area of her compound at about 5am on Thursday and Friday, breaking a door and window panes as they did.
She said she last encountered elephants almost a year ago, when they encroached into her compound, damaging the gates and window panes, which had to be repaired many times.
“I was shocked, stunned and frozen with fear when I saw an elephant in front of my eyes. I panicked and didn’t know what to do. My pet dog, too, was cowering in fear,” she said at her residence here today.
She hoped the authorities would take appropriate action .
Another resident, Saedin Sadoon, 49, said his son was injured when he ran his motorcycle into an elephant in the dark.
Johor wildlife and parks director Aminuddin Jamin said the department was tracking the herd of elephants and would later relocate the herd away from the settlement.
He said the department would monitor the whereabouts of the elephants. “These animals cannot be caught or shot at will because it is feared that they will react unexpectedly, including going berserk,” he said.
A video recording from a security camera and some video clips believed to have been recorded by residents has been widely shared. - FMT
