Umno Propagandist Lokman Adam Makes Public Apology To Lawyer Rosli Dahlan

Today is fixed for trial for the defamation suit initiated by lawyer Rosli Dahlan against Dato’ Lokman Adam. Three years ago, Umno Chief Propagandist Dato’ Lokman Adam defamed Lawyer Rosli Dahlan.
High Court Judge YA Puan Mahazan Binti Mat Taib directed Lokman to enter the Witness Box to read the Unreserved, Unequivocal and Unqualified Apology to Rosli Dahlan in Open Court.
Judge YA Puan Mahazan Binti Mat Taib then invited Rosli to say a few words and Rosli said in the spirit of Ramadan he accepts the apology. Judge YA Puan Mahazan Binti Mat Taib commended Rosli for being magnanimous in victory.
Judge YA Puan Mahazan also requested that the apology be publicised widely not only through Lokman’s social media platforms but also by the mainstream media to be a lesson that fitnah is an abominable act and should not be perpetuated.
Rosli was represented by Amiratu Al Amirat and Elani Mazlan while Lokman was represented by Dato Hariharan and Fakhrul Redha.
The Apology in BM and English are reproduced below:
DATO’ LOKMAN NOOR ADAM MOHON MAAF KEPADA PEGUAM ROSLI DAHLAN
Saya, Dato’ Lokman Noor Adam, dengan penuh keinsafan, kerelaan, tanpa sebarang paksaan, dan dengan suci dan rela hati menyatakan seperti berikut:
1. Pada 2021, saya telah menyiarkan 3 video yang membuat pelbagai tuduhan yang tidak benar yang memfitnah Peguam Rosli Dahlan.
2. Apabila disaman oleh Peguam Rosli Dahlan, saya telah memadamkan kesemua video tersebut berkenaan peranannya dalam usaha pemulihan aset 1MDB yang sebenarnya bermanfaat buat 1MDB dan negara Malaysia.
3. Video fitnah saya telah tersebar secara meluas dan menyurup nyawanya sendiri (‘taken a life of its own’) dan telah mengakibatkan fitnah yang serupa dibuat oleh pelbagai pihak lain di saluran dan platform yang berbeza.
4. Antara pihak yang terpengaruh dengan fitnah saya ialah sebuah badan NGO, Center to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4). Pada 21.5.2021, C4 telah menerbitkan satu permohonan maaf terbuka seperti berikut:
“APOLOGY BY C4 CENTER TO LAWYER ROSLI DAHLAN
1. C4 Center, an NGO that combats corruption and cronyism and an advocate of a clean, competent governance system, hereby make this unreserved, unequivocal and unconditional apology to Lawyer Rosli Dahlan in respect of a posting made on C4 Center’s website, Facebook and Twitter on 25.3.2021 (“the Posts”). We truly regret the making of the Posts.
2. We deeply apologize that our Posts had wrongly, unfairly and seriously injured Lawyer Rosli Dahlan’s character, integrity, credit and reputation and could well have eroded the confidence of the public in him. We accept that our Posts have also brought him into public scandal, odium, contempt and disrepute exposing him to hatred and ridicule and lowered him in the estimation of the public.
3. We admit the falsity of the said Posts and acknowledge their effects and upon his demand on 29.3.2021, we immediately removed the said Posts from our website, Facebook and Twitter accounts. We acknowledge that the said False Posts have taken a life of its own and had been reproduced, republished, reposted, retweeted and shared causing it to go viral on various other platforms.
4. We hereby express our deep remorse for our wrongful conduct and the damage caused to Lawyer Rosli Dahlan. To further vindicate the damage that we have caused to him, we hereby make the following statements:
a) That the said Posts were plainly highly defamatory, false and baseless;
b) That we had failed to verify the said Posts;
c) That there was no basis to allege that Lawyer Rosli Dahlan had illegally, unlawfully, unjustly and unduly profited by pocketing monies in connection with the 1MDB asset recovery efforts;
d) That there was no basis to allege or imply that Lawyer Rosli Dahlan had defrauded the Malaysian Public by pocketing monies intended to settle 1MDB’s liabilities.
5. We further state that we truly regret that we have stained the reputation of Lawyer Rosli Dahlan who by all accounts is an honest and a morally upright citizen, and has a good reputation for being a highly professional and ethical lawyer who strives to maintain a high standard of transparency, integrity and virtue.
6. C4 Center deeply regrets the dishonour that we had caused him, his family and his law firm and we hereby wholeheartedly denounce the said Posts in their entirety. For this C4 Center and its Directors sincerely apologise to Lawyer Rosli Dahlan.

5. Namun, kesan fitnah saya yang telah tular masih tidak reda dan diulangi oleh pelbagai pihak lain walaupun masa telah berlalu, antaranya, media ternama, Sinar Harian, dan seorang Penganalisis Politik Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Profesor Madya Dr Mazlan Ali.
6. Pada 20.10.2023, Sinar Harian dan Profesor Mazlan telah memohon maaf kerana telah memfitnah dan secara serius mencemarkan watak, integriti, kredit dan reputasi Peguam Rosli Dahlan. Mereka juga insaf kerana telah merosakkan reputasi Peguam Rosli Dahlan sebagai seorang peguam yang profesional dan berintegriti tinggi. Mereka mengakui bahawa Peguam Rosli Dahlan sebenarnya adalah seorang yang budiman, jujur, berakhlak mulia dan amat dihormati.
7. Saya dengan ini mengakui bahawa saya telah memfitnah Peguam Rosli Dahlan sedangkan fakta sebenar adalah seperti berikut:
a) Bahawa Peguam Rosli Dahlan tidak pernah menuntut atau mendapat sebarang komisen atau 10% nilai pemulihan aset;
b) Bahawa yuran guaman Firmanya, RDS Partnership, adalah berdasarkan kadar masa yang telah dipersetujui terdahulu (‘pre-agreed time cost’), sama seperti peguam lain yang bertindak untuk 1MDB, dan bukan berdasarkan sebarang komisen atau peratusan nilai pemulihan aset;
c) Bahawa Peguam Rosli Dahlan atau Firmanya tidak pernah menerima RM1.7 bilion dari penyelesaian dengan Goldman Sachs (GS) dan itu adalah fitnah;
d) Bahawa Peguam Rosli Dahlan atau Firmanya tidak pernah menerima RM283 juta dari penyelesaian dengan AmBank dan itu adalah fitnah;
e) Bahawa adalah mustahil untuk Peguam Rosli Dahlan atau Firmanya menerima sebarang hasil pemulihan aset 1MDB kerana semua hasil pemulihan dan penyelesaian 1MDB dibayar terus kepada akaun Jabatan Akauntan Negara Malaysia dan bukan kepada Peguam Rosli Dahlan atau Firmanya.
8. Saya dengan ini menyusun sepuluh jari memohon maaf kerana fitnah saya telah mencemarkan watak, integriti dan reputasi Peguam Rosli Dahlan dan menjadikannya bahan cemuhan masyarakat Malaysia serta merendahkan beliau di kalangan orang ramai. Keikhlasan dan jasa beliau terhadap negara seharusnya dihargai dan bukan dijadikan bahan serangan politik.
9. Saya amat menyesal kerana Peguam Rosli Dahlan terus dimalukan, difitnah dan mengalami kemudaratan akibat fitnah saya. Sebagai seorang Islam, saya menyedari bahawa fitnah itu lebih buruk daripada membunuh (Surah Al-Baqarah: 191 dan 217). Maka, inilah usaha saya untuk memperbetulkan kesilapan yang telah berlaku.
10. Oleh itu, saya dengan penuh insaf menyatakan seperti berikut:
a) Peguam Rosli Dahlan adalah seorang peguam yang bersikap profesional dan beretika tinggi;
b) Peguam Rosli Dahlan dikenali kerana keberaniannya dalam kes-kes berkepentingan awam untuk menegakkan kebenaran demi mencapai keadilan tanpa takut dan gentar;
c) Peguam Rosli Dahlan adalah seorang yang budiman, jujur, amanah, berintegriti tinggi dan amat dihormati;
d) Peguam Rosli Dahlan tidak pernah menjadi kroni sesiapa jua pun;
e) Peguam Rosli Dahlan bukanlah seorang yang korup, malah beliau sentiasa menentang rasuah.
11. Sebagai tanda ikhlas saya untuk membersihkan nama Peguam Rosli Dahlan, saya akan membuat video memohon maaf dan menyiarkan video serta teks permohonan maaf ini di semua platform media sosial saya.
12. Sekali lagi saya menyusun 10 jari memohon ampun dan maaf di atas kesilapan dan keterlanjuran saya terhadap Peguam Rosli Dahlan, ahli keluarganya, firma RDS dan rakan kongsinya dan kepada semua yang terkesan akibat tempias fitnah saya tersebut. Semoga Allah memberkati usaha saya untuk memperbetulkan kesalahan saya terhadap Peguam Rosli Dahlan demi kebenaran dan keadilan.
DATO’ LOKMAN NOOR ADAM APOLOGISES TO LAWYER ROSLI DAHLAN
I, Dato’ Lokman Noor Adam, with great remorse and voluntarily without any coercion, sincerely and willingly state as follows:
1. In 2021, I had published 3 videos containing various false allegations that defamed Lawyer Rosli Dahlan.
2. Upon being sued by Lawyer Rosli Dahlan, I removed all the videos regarding his role in the recovery of 1MDB’s assets which in fact was beneficial to 1MDB and Malaysia.
3. My false and defamatory videos have gone viral and taken a life of its own and have resulted in similar defamatory statements being made by various other parties across different channels and platforms.
4. Among those influenced by my false and defamatory statements was an NGO, the Center to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4). On 21.5.2021, C4 issued a public apology as follows:

5. However, the passage of time did not result in my false and defamatory statements, which had gone viral, to subside but had instead continued to be repeated by various other parties including mainstream media outlet, Sinar Harian, and a political analyst from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Associate Professor Dr Mazlan Ali.
6. On 20.10.2023, Sinar Harian and Professor Mazlan have apologised for defaming and seriously tarnishing the character, integrity, credibility and reputation of Lawyer Rosli Dahlan. They have expressed deep regret for damaging the reputation of Lawyer Rosli Dahlan as a lawyer with high professionalism and integrity. They acknowledged that Lawyer Rosli Dahlan is a righteous, honest, morally upright and highly respected individual.
7. I hereby admit that I have made false and defamatory statements against Lawyer Rosli Dahlan whereas the actual facts are as follows:
a) That Lawyer Rosli Dahlan never claimed nor received any commission or 10% of the asset recovery value;
b) That the legal fees of his firm, RDS Partnership, were based on a pre-agreed time cost, similar to other lawyers acting for 1MDB, and not based on any commission or percentage of the recovered assets;
c) That Lawyer Rosli Dahlan or his Firm never received RM1.7 billion from the settlement with Goldman Sachs (GS) and that allegation is false and defamatory;
d) That Lawyer Rosli Dahlan or his Firm never received RM283 million from the settlement with AmBank and that allegation is false and defamatory;
e) That it is impossible for Lawyer Rosli Dahlan or his Firm to have received any proceeds from the recovery of 1MDB’s assets as all proceeds from the recovery and settlement of 1MDB were paid directly to the Accountant General’s Department of Malaysia and not to Lawyer Rosli Dahlan or his Firm.
8. With deep remorse, I hereby express my sincere apologies as my false and defamatory statements which had tarnished the character, integrity and reputation of Lawyer Rosli Dahlan, subjecting him to public ridicule in the Malaysian community and diminishing his standing among the public. His sincere contributions to the country should be valued and he should not have been subjected to political attacks.
9. I deeply regret that my false and defamatory statements have caused Lawyer Rosli Dahlan to suffer continuing humiliation and harm. As a Muslim, I am aware that defamation is worse than murder (Surah Al-Baqarah: 191 and 217). As such, I hope to rectify the mistakes that I have committed.
10. With the deepest sincerity, I hereby state the following:
a) Lawyer Rosli Dahlan is a highly professional and ethical lawyer;
b) Lawyer Rosli Dahlan is known for his courage in handling public interest cases to uphold truth and justice without fear or favour;
c) Lawyer Rosli Dahlan is a righteous, honest, trustworthy, highly respected individual with immaculate integrity;
d) Lawyer Rosli Dahlan is not and has never been a crony to anyone;
e) Lawyer Rosli Dahlan is not corrupt and he has always in fact opposed corruption.
11. To further vindicate the damage that I have caused to Lawyer Rosli Dahlan’s reputation, I will make an apology video and publish the video and the full text of this apology on all my social media platforms.
12. Finally, I sincerely seek forgiveness and express my deepest regret for the dishonour that I had caused to him, his family, his firm and partners and all those who have been affected by my false and defamatory statements. May Allah bless my efforts to right my wrongdoings against Lawyer Rosli Dahlan in the pursuit of truth and justice.
