In a statement on its Instagram page, Umany said it meant to merge the matriculation programme with the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) examination, based on the STPM syllabus.
The association said this would allow students from various backgrounds to compete fairly under a single examination platform, adding that the integrated examination would continue to consider the needs of underprivileged students to reflect social justice values.
Umany submitted a memorandum to the Higher Education Ministry yesterday, saying a unified examination system was the most effective way to address university admission inequities. It added that such a system would allow all students to compete on a level playing field.
The group also said Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek had recently said the concept of a unified examination could be evaluated holistically, indicating that the ministry saw a need for more research.
Umany said it believed that once a unified examination was implemented, the government could introduce specific quotas to support those in need, ensuring they were given due priority.
"At the same time, all outstanding students can be fairly compared on the same platform, thereby decisively resolving the recurring controversy over student admissions each year," it said. - NST
