Syed Saddiq Forced To Back Government Or Face Prosecution Claims Ally
(MSN) : Muda’s secretary-general, Amir Hariri Abd Hadi has revealed that former Muda President Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman had been under intense pressure to support the government in parliamentary votes.
He alleged that Syed Saddiq had been warned that refusing to comply could lead to prosecution.
In an Instagram story posted yesterday, Amir shared his support and words of encouragement for his former president as Syed Saddiq faced the first day of his court appeal.
“If I had only heard about it, I might have doubted the story. But since we were in the same organisation (Muda), I saw it unfold firsthand.
“Whenever a parliamentary vote was required, there was always someone pressuring Syed Saddiq to support the government, warning that he would otherwise face prosecution,” Amir alleged.
Amir revealed that the constant pressure had severely impacted Syed Saddiq’s mental well-being.
He clarified that the situation had become so overwhelming that Syed Saddiq reached his breaking point, repeatedly stating he could not handle it any longer and even seemed to plead for immediate charges to be brought against him.
“And now, in the blink of an eye, the day has finally arrived. Today is the moment of truth. Stay strong, bro. Take care,” Amir said.
Amir’s statement comes in the wake of Syed Saddiq’s conviction on Nov 9, 2023 by the Kuala Lumpur High Court on four corruption-related charges, including criminal breach of trust, misuse of property and money laundering.
He was sentenced to seven years in prison, fined RM10 million and given two strokes of the cane.
However, he has been granted a stay of execution pending his appeal at the Court of Appeal.
The charges against Syed Saddiq stemmed from his tenure as the Angkatan Bersatu Anak Muda (Armada) Chief, the youth wing of Bersatu.
The prosecution alleged that he had misappropriated party funds between 2018 and 2020.
One of the key charges accused him of abetting Armada’s then-Assistant Treasurer, Rafiq Hakim Razali in misusing RM1 million in party funds at CIMB Bank Berhad on March 6, 2020.
Another charge involved the misuse of RM120,000 from Armada Bumi Bersatu Enterprise’s account for personal benefit in April 2018.
He was also charged with two counts of money laundering for transferring RM50,000 each from his Maybank Islamic account into his Amanah Saham Bumiputera account in June 2018.
At the time of the alleged offences, Malaysia was under the Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration, with Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as prime minister.
Syed Saddiq was a member of Bersatu and served as Youth and Sports Minister in Dr Mahathir’s Cabinet.
However, the charges were brought against him following the Sheraton Move, which led to the collapse of the PH government in February 2020.
His conviction followed his decision to withdraw support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s administration in protest of Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s discharge not amounting to acquittal (DNAA) on corruption charges.
Syed Saddiq resigned as Muda President immediately after his sentencing but continues to appeal the High Court’s ruling.
Should the Court of Appeal uphold the conviction, he may still seek a final appeal at the Federal Court.
