Eain Yow, who is now ranked 18th in the world, said he wants to be among the world’s top 10 squash players by next June, Bernama reported.
“For this season, I have already targeted to hit the top 10 in the world. The first target this season, the Asian Games, has been achieved,” he told reporters at KLIA after returning from Hangzhou.
The 25-year-old said he is now focused on winning gold at the Malaysia Ace Cup 2023 to be held in Seremban next month.
Eain Yow beat India’s Ghosal Saurav in the men’s singles final 9-11, 11-9, 11-5, 11-7 for Malaysia’s fifth gold medal of this year’s Asian Games yesterday. It was also the squash team’s third gold medal in Hangzhou.
The win ended a 13-year gold medal drought for Malaysia in the men’s singles event, which Azlan Iskandar last won for the country at the Guangzhou Asian Games in 2010.
Eain Yow, the 2021 Asian individual championships winner, said he hopes squash will be contested in the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028.
“I feel that not many people are paying attention to squash since the retirement of Nicol David. During her time, Nicol said if given a chance, she would trade her eight world titles for an Olympic gold.
“We always hear talk of getting this sport into the Olympics, but it is not in yet. If squash gets included, it will become more popular and attract more funding. I hope the International Olympic Committee will consider this matter.” - FMT
