Spend More Time With Children
Kids are so innocent ,
All they want is to spend more time with their parents.
But what about us as parents? Do we care about spending enough time with them?
Sometimes, we don’t.
And by doing so, we end up hurting the ones we love the most.
Nobody wants to hurt their little ones of course, but…
That doesn’t make us free from guilt.
That’s exactly what happened to one of my students.
His name is Gus.
Gus is a family man with a little 9-year-old boy named Thomas.
One day he came to me for help.
And so he began telling me his story:
My son is a dreamer – he said-. He just loves reading stories!
He even says he wants to be a writer when he grows up.
About two years ago, I decided to start my own business.
And was busy all the time because of it.
Well, Thomas had read in one of his stories that treehouses were magical.
So excited he waited for me awake until I got home at 10 p.m and told me about it!
Then, he asked me if we could build one together.
Of course, I said yes. I mean, who could refuse to have his little eyes filled with joy and enthusiasm.
We set a start date.
We’d start next weekend.
Thomas was so excited he crossed out each day that passed on the calendar!
Up to that big day highlighted that said.
“Build the treehouse with my Super Dad”
The problem is that I completely forgot to write down this in my agenda.
I should’ve been home by 2 p.m, but I completely forgot…
…Even when my wife reminded me just before I left for work.
The day was going great!
Sales were increasing by the hour.
So I decided to work late.
Then, I got back home.
When I arrived, I saw my son Thomas sleeping on the couch…
…all dressed up like a real builder.
That’s when I realized I had forgotten about the treehouse.
When I met my wife, she greeted me as usual and took Thomas to his room.
I noticed he had woken up, so I decided to go upstairs and apologize.
But before I entered the room, I heard Thomas saying to his mom…
“Mom, why am I not important to Dad?”
At that moment , my world stopped.
I went downstairs and just sat there on the couch crying.
I felt miserable.
Guilty.
As if I was the worst father in the whole world.
I started questioning my life.
Have I made the right decisions?
How much time have I really been giving to my family? Was it enough?
Have I really shown my son Thomas how much I love him?
That’s when I realized it hadn’t been enough…
But was it too late already? Or could I still do something about it?
At that moment my wife came downstairs and found me sitting there on the couch.
She came up to me and asked me.
Why are you crying, Gus?
I heard you and Thomas talk – I told her-.
He thinks he’s not important to me when in reality, everything I do is for him.
Martha hugged me and said:
“Easy honey, you can solve everything. It’s not too late yet.”
“Show him that he is the most valuable thing in your life”
After thinking about what happened all night long, I realized what my problem was…
I wasn’t organized enough with my time.
So, If I created a system to organize every hour of my day…
I would make enough time for Thomas.
That way I would still be productive at work and I would also spend more time with my family.
And so I did…
Every day I left work exactly at 5 pm.
Then I would come home and spend an hour building that magical treehouse for Thomas.
It was our father and son moment.
And as we spent more time building that treehouse, our bond grew stronger and stronger.
After several weeks, it was ready.
A cute little blue treehouse.
Thomas’s favorite color.
But what’s even better, Is that went back to being his Super Dad.
Now, If you think you are in a similar situation as Gus was, then I have something for you.
It’s a book I wrote called The Full Life Planner.
Inside this book, I’ll show you how to organize yourself and make time for the things that truly matter in life.
