Singapore Hands Malaysian Terror Suspect To Kl
Mohd Firdaus Kamal had posted Isis material on social media and wanted to join their fight in Syria, says the Singapore government.PETALING JAYA: A Malaysian arrested in Singapore on suspicion of terrorism has been handed over to Malaysia and is now under the custody of the Special Branch.
Singapore’s Internal Security Department (ISD) said in a statement today that Mohd Firdaus Kamal Intdzam was repatriated to Malaysia last August after they completed their investigations.
The 33-year-old, who was working as a cleaner in Singapore, had been arrested under the republic’s Internal Security Act (ISA) a month earlier.
Investigations found that he was a supporter of the terrorist group Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (Isis). However, there was no evidence that he intended to carry out an attack in Singapore.
The ISD said Firdaus actively posted materials promoting Isis and armed jihad on his social media accounts, and created an Isis flag in March 2020, which he hung at home to show his loyalty towards the group.
“He harboured the intention to travel to Syria with his wife to fight alongside Isis.
“He was also willing to carry out attacks against countries which he deemed to be oppressing Muslims, or which he perceived to be munafiq (hypocrite) for aligning themselves with the West,” it said.
The ISD said Firdaus’ wife, Singaporean Ruqayyah Ramli, 34, was issued a Restriction Order under the ISA for two years in August last year after investigations found that she had been radicalised by her husband. Ruqayyah and Firdaus married in December, 2018. - FMT
