Sarawak To Hold Grand 60th Anniversary Celebrations

State minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the premier of Sarawak, Abang Johari Openg, would join a Sarawak Merdeka Convoy as part of the celebrations.KUCHING: Sarawak will mark the 60th anniversary of its independence within Malaysia with nine large-scale events, culminating in a giant rally and parade at Padang Merdeka on July 22.
Nine events have been scheduled for the celebrations, from May to July, said the state minister of tourism, creative industry and performing arts, Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah today.
The first event will be the Sarawak Merdeka Convoy across 12 divisions of the state, beginning in Limbang on May 28 and ending in Kuching on July 22.
Ads by KioskedJuly 22 has been celebrated as Sarawak Independence Day since 2016, to mark the day in 1963 that the state gained self-government before becoming an independent state and part of the Malaysian federation in September that year.
-ADVERTISEMENT-Ads by Karim said the premier of Sarawak, Abang Johari Openg, had agreed to join the second stage of the convoy, from Miri to Bintulu, either by motorbike or car, starting on June 10.
A digital exhibition on Sarawak’s 60 Years will be held in all divisions and tour with the travelling convoy starting from May 28 to July 22, while thanksgiving ceremonies will be conducted at mosques and houses of worship throughout the state on July 21.
A giant gathering and parade at Padang Merdeka here on July 22 starting at 8.30am will be the highlight of the celebrations, followed by the presentation of commemorative medals to people who have fought for the development of Sarawak throughout its six decades of independence.
Karim said a state banquet will be held at the state assembly building, in addition to the Konsert Rakyat and fireworks display at Padang Merdeka starting at 8pm.
A parade of decorated boats would also be held on the Kuching riverbank on July 29, while street parade performances will be held in Kuching on Aug 5, Sibu (Aug 12) and Miri (Aug 19). - FMT
