Sarawak Dap Reaffirms Commitment As State Opposition
Sarawak DAP had reaffirmed to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim it will serve as the opposition in the state.
This was conveyed to Anwar when he held a meeting with Sarawak Pakatan Harapan's leadership in Kuching yesterday.
"On behalf of Sarawak Harapan, our chairperson Chong Chieng Jen (above) affirmed that Sarawak Harapan will support Anwar as the prime minister until his term ends.
"(The prime minister) also acknowledged Sarawak DAP's stand that it will be the opposition in Sarawak and respected its stand," said Sarawak Harapan information chief Abun Sui Anyit.
The statement was silent on whether Sarawak Harapan's two other components - PKR and Amanah - were committed to playing the state opposition role.
Both PKR and Amanah have no seats in the 82-seat Sarawak legislative assembly. The opposition party with the most seats is Parti Sarawak Bersatu at three.
Anwar was in Sarawak yesterday afternoon for a quick visit where he also launched a hotel and held a meeting with Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg.
Abun Sui said Sarawak Harapan's meeting with Anwar yesterday was the first since the latter was appointed prime minister.
"The prime minister acknowledged the needs of Sarawak Harapan and will consider our recommendations, including unrecorded leave for Sarawakians in Peninsular Malaysia who are celebrating Gawai.
"Sarawak Harapan was also asked to help strengthen the unity government by spreading the Malaysia Madani concept throughout the state," said Abun Sui.
Sarawak Harapan has six seats in the Dewan Rakyat. There are 31 MPs from Sarawak. - Mkini
