Sabah Polls Grs Manifesto Includes Limiting Cm Tenure To 2 Terms
Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) has plans to limit the Sabah chief minister’s tenure to two consecutive terms, as part of its manifesto for the upcoming state polls.
The ruling coalition’s deputy secretary-general, Armizan Ali, said this proposal was approved in December 2023 at a Sabah cabinet meeting.
The Sabah government is in the process of drafting a bill to that effect, he added.
Armizan explained that this requires an amendment to the state Constitution, which requires the approval of two-thirds of legislative assembly members.
Hence, he said GRS needs a landslide victory in the state election, with more than two-thirds majority, to ensure this can be realised.
ADS“The measure to limit the term of office is important to guarantee leadership renewal and avoid prolonged concentration of power,” he said in a statement today.
Armizan, who is also the domestic trade and cost of living minister, claimed GRS is a pioneer in this endeavour when it previously voiced a commitment to limit the chief minister’s term.
He added that the GRS manifesto would be based on four main thrusts: Sabah First, Sabah Forward, Sabah Prosper, and Sabah United.
This reflects the coalition’s commitment to strengthening state development, ensuring the well-being of the people, and strengthening governance with integrity, he said.
He explained that the four thrusts were agreed upon at the manifesto team’s first meeting, which he chaired, together with members from the eight GRS component parties.
