KOTA KINABALU: Datuk V.K. Liew lost his bid to become Batu Sapi Parti Warisan Sabah division chief during the party elections held on Saturday
According to party officials on Sunday (April 7), the incumbent Batu Sapi chief, Roslan Nasrun, a political secretary to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, garnered 74 votes to defeat Liew with 33 votes
Liew, the Batu Sapi MP, joined Warisan ahead of the May 2018 general election and was selected as a candidate for the party
He was made a Minister in the Prime Minister's Department in the Pakatan Harapan government
Roslan hoped that all winners and losers would now close ranks and work together in the interests of the party
Warisan, a dormant party taken over by former Umno vice-president Mohd Shafie after he was suspended by the party in late 2017, is holding its first divisional elections after taking over the state government
Shafie was returned unopposed as Semporna division chief during the meeting on Sunday
His Semporna deputy chairman Datuk Jaujan Sambakong, who is also Deputy Chief Minister, retained his seat after staving off a challenge from another political secretary to the Chief Minister, Jakariya Abdul Jalil
When opening the Semporna meeting, Shafie urged members to work towards strengthening the party and not just look at positions
"We have to learn from the mistakes of other parties in the past. Don't focus on winning positions but focus on serving the people," Shafie said, adding that Warisan was a young party that needed to remain focused on its promises to the people
Shafie warned that infighting for positions might reflect badly on the party, which might lead to people rejecting it
Warisan's 26 divisions, including Labuan, completed their annual meetings and elections Sunday and the party's annual general meeting will be held in Kota Kinabalu in early May.- Star
