Register Muda Too Urges Sec Gen
Led by former youth and sports minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, MUDA is seeking a court order to compel the home ministry to make a decision on its registration under the Societies Act.PETALING JAYA: MUDA has called on the government to approve its application to be registered as a political party “immediately”, in light of the news that Pejuang has been officially registered.
Earlier today, former prime minister and Pejuang pro tem chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced that the party he formed nearly a year ago had finally been given the green light by the Registrar of Societies (RoS) – after the Kuala Lumpur High Court gave home minister Hamzah Zainudin until July 8 to decide on the party’s appeal to be registered as a political party.
Welcoming today’s decision by the RoS, MUDA secretary-general Amir Abd Hadi said freedom of association is a fundamental right guaranteed by the Federal Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
He also called on the Societies Act 1966 to be amended as per the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia’s (Suhakam) proposal, which among others, would oblige the body to provide its reasons for declining or not responding to an application.
“We also urge that MUDA be approved immediately,” he said.
Led by former youth and sports minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, MUDA is currently seeking a court order to compel Hamzah to make a decision on its registration under Section 18 of the Societies Act.
Earlier this year, RoS rejected MUDA’s application for registration but did not provide specific reasons.
The party then filed its appeal to the home minister in February, but Hamzah has yet to respond.
The High Court has fixed Aug 12 to hear MUDA’s suit to compel the home ministry to make a decision on its application to be registered as a political party. - FMT
