Red Crescent Society Probes Alleged Misconduct By Teen Girl
The Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Society is investigating claims of misconduct by a teenage girl, who wore the society’s uniform, in a viral video that purportedly showed her and a man performing an alleged sex act in a car.
In a statement today, the society’s secretary-general Hakim Hamzah said the MRC takes all allegations of misconduct seriously and is prepared to cooperate with the authorities.
“We hold all of our youth, members, volunteers, employees, and representatives to a strict code of conduct,” he said.
This comes after the 17-year-old girl in question, along with a 22-year-old man, were detained on Thursday (April 6) over a video clip which depicted them in a compromising position in a car at a parking lot in Johor.
They spent a night in detention and the police obtained a two-day remand order yesterday to probe them under Section 377D of the Penal Code for “gross indecency”.
The couple has been released and sought help from Tebrau MP and lawyer Jimmy Puah, claiming they were accosted by people posing as police personnel.
In an apparent reference to parody videos of the incident found online, Hakim condemned the misuse of the society’s emblem by the public and social media influencers who are riding on the trend of the incident.
“We would like to inform and remind members of the public that the Red Crescent emblem is a symbol of protection and convey that help is at hand. They also signify hope and must be respected.
“The Red Crescent emblem and the words ‘Red Crescent’ or ‘Bulan Sabit Merah’ are specifically protected in the Malaysian Red Cross Society (Change of Name) Act 1975 [Act 162].
“Unauthorised use of the emblem by any person other than the MRC is forbidden,” he stressed.
Therefore, he asserted that the MRC would not hesitate to pursue legal action against those who violate the act to maintain respect towards the emblem. - Mkini
