Psm Chair To Ignore Cease And Desist Order Wants Pknp To Engage
PSM chairperson Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj has called on the Perak State Development Corporation (PKNP) to engage with farmers and activists rather than issue letters of demand that would suppress meaningful exchange.
This came after Jeyakumar was slapped with a “cease and desist” letter on behalf of the PKNP over remarks made in an article carried by the news portal Free Malaysia Today (FMT).
The article titled “PSM chief lodges report over arrest of farmer in Chemor” was about his demand for the release of a farmer in Perak arrested for allegedly obstructing a policeman from carrying out his duty in Chemor.
"I think it's very difficult for us to adhere to their demands when we are actually making some valid criticisms of the process.
"So how can I cease and desist when it is a valid complaint?" Jeyakumar told Malaysiakini.
Retraction and apology
In the cease and desist letter dated April 25 and sighted by Malaysiakini, the PKNP called Jeyakumar's statements "completely unfounded, untrue and highly defamatory".
The lawyer's letter calls on him to cease making future statements as well as to issue a retraction and apology for his previous statement. within seven days of the date of the letter.
The former Sungai Siput MP said that he had not paid attention to the seven-day deadline.
"I am not paying attention to the seven days. It's not a reasonable request. They should engage with us and it is the wrong approach to shut us up." he said. - Mkini
